Simone & Michael O’Connor

MARRIED 29 MARCH 2018

Sims and Mikey have been together for over 8 years now, and they couldn't be happier!  They met through friends of Sims years prior to getting together, and that only served to turn a great friendship into a beautiful relationship.

They tell us they are both fairly quiet and easy going people. They both enjoy a variety of good food and wine - going out to nice restaurants together. They also encourage and support each other trying new things - not just food and wine, but brave things like base jumping or watching random Netflix shows.

Mikey's favourite moment of Sims was how excited she was when they did the "Meet a Cheetah" Experience at the National Zoo & Aquarium in 2012 - he hasn't seen her as excited about anything since (well, perhaps their engagement, but we digress)! Sims' favourite moment of Mikey was in 2017 when he finally caved and said they could look at getting a kitten, even though he is allergic to cats. So, they went to the RSPCA for a look. Mikey, the brave soul, went into one of the kitten cages and three or four kittens climbed up on him and 'claimed' him - he was close to adopting them all! They ended up coming home with two kittens.

Mikey & Sims have far too many memories to share all at once, but to stick with wine theme (they had a wine sharing ceremony on their special day), here's a little story that features wine, of sorts: In January 2012, they holidayed in Tasmania. They were just getting into trying different varieties of wine and had, not long before the trip, discovered a nice dessert wine at a family dinner. So in Tasmania, they went to a gorgeous restaurant in Cradle Mountain and with dessert decided they would try ordering some dessert wine for themselves. When the waiter returned, they were confused as to why the glasses were so tiny. They didn't say anything, but looked confused and started sipping as the waiter walked away... It turned out they had ordered port! As such, they discovered they also loved port!

They have spent many precious times together, including trips across the seas to places such as Canada.  Although, as hard as they tried to see bears while they were over there (like by hiking in well-known danger zones for bears), they didn't see a single one on their entire road trip from Vancouver to Banff via Whistler.

They say they don't really know exactly when they fell in love with each other. It just, quite simply, happened. This is, of course, purest form of love, whereby two people grow slowly closer and closer together, and realise they are truly meant for each other, and as rare as people may say it is, Mikey & Sims are a perfect example of it.

The proposal was back in January 2016 - on their sixth anniversary of becoming an official couple. They share a special tradition whereby each year they take it in turns: one person buys the other a gift and the other person books a special restaurant for dinner. In 2016, it was Mikey's year to buy a present for Sims. They decided, as per Sims decision, not to be at a special restaurant, but to celebrate at home playing a co-operative tabletop game, "Forbidden Desert", coupled with a pre-dinner espresso martini. Suddenly the ring box appeared on the table. Sims wasn't 100% sure it was an engagement ring, so she started to put it on a different finger! Mikey stopped her and proposed, to which Sims instantly said yes!

On their wedding day, we spent a little time with each of them as they got ready at their respective locations before taking them out to the Four Winds Vineyard for a "First Look", where they meet prior to their ceremony.  We took them around the vines, for an amazing little photoshoot before they agreed to marry each other, sealing the deal with a wine sharing ceremony.  It was so perfectly them. They celebrated with pizza and wine with their closest friends and family. It was a perfectly relaxed atmosphere for the whole day and such a pleasure to be there to photograph their day!
